What are Sun Spots?

Sun spots are a common type of hyperpigmentation, appearing as flat marks in shades of brown, tan, or black. They form as a reaction to prolonged sun exposure, during which skin cells produce excess melanin. They appear on areas frequently exposed to UV rays, such as the face, shoulders, and hands, as a result of the skin’s attempt to protect itself from further sun damage.

While sun spots themselves are harmless, they are often mistaken for other skin conditions, such as seborrheic keratosis or actinic keratosis, which can carry greater health risks.
Consulting a qualified skin specialist for an accurate diagnosis is essential to determine the right treatment path. At Dr Jinah Yoo Dermatology, our team provides thorough evaluations to help you understand and treat your pigmentation issues safely and effectively.

How We Treat Sun Spots at Dr Jinah Yoo Dermatology

At Dr Jinah Yoo Dermatology, we specialise in removing a variety of benign skin lesions, including warts, skin tags, and other common skin growths. Our expert team carefully assesses each lesion through a physical examination and diagnostic tests to ensure an accurate diagnosis before proceeding with treatment. This patient-centred approach enables us to choose the most suitable removal method for optimal cosmetic outcomes and minimal disruption to surrounding healthy skin.

Laser treatment is effective in removing some of the pigmented lesions. The pigment within the lesion is broken down using a light energy laser therapy. The reason laser therapy is a good option for pigmented skin lesion removal from face is because the risk of scarring is very minimal with this kind of treatment. However, laser treatment is not recommended for any individual with a history of skin cancer, either themselves or in their family.

Some deeper-seated skin lesions may require cutting away in an ellipse shape. The procedure requires a local anaesthetic, followed by a few stitches to close the wound. After the procedure, you will notice a small linear scar, which can fade over time or be improved with the laser subsequently.

Our advanced laser treatment offers effective results with minimal discomfort and downtime.

Laser treatment is highly effective for treating age spots, sun spots, and other forms of hyperpigmentation. However, the results may vary based on the skin type and depth of pigmentation. For certain cases of persistent pigmentation, additional options like chemical peels may be recommended to complement the laser treatment.

The number of treatments required can vary depending on the severity of the sun spots, the depth of skin pigment, and individual skin response.
