What are Sun Spots?
Sun spots are a common type of hyperpigmentation, appearing as flat marks in shades of brown, tan, or black. They form as a reaction to prolonged sun exposure, during which skin cells produce excess melanin. They appear on areas frequently exposed to UV rays, such as the face, shoulders, and hands, as a result of the skin’s attempt to protect itself from further sun damage.
While sun spots themselves are harmless, they are often mistaken for other skin conditions, such as seborrheic keratosis or actinic keratosis, which can carry greater health risks.
Consulting a qualified skin specialist for an accurate diagnosis is essential to determine the right treatment path. At Dr Jinah Yoo Dermatology, our team provides thorough evaluations to help you understand and treat your pigmentation issues safely and effectively.
How We Treat Sun Spots at Dr Jinah Yoo Dermatology
At Dr Jinah Yoo Dermatology, we specialise in removing a variety of benign skin lesions, including warts, skin tags, and other common skin growths. Our expert team carefully assesses each lesion through a physical examination and diagnostic tests to ensure an accurate diagnosis before proceeding with treatment. This patient-centred approach enables us to choose the most suitable removal method for optimal cosmetic outcomes and minimal disruption to surrounding healthy skin.
Laser Removal
Laser treatment is effective in removing some of the pigmented lesions. The pigment within the lesion is broken down using a light energy laser therapy. The reason laser therapy is a good option for pigmented skin lesion removal from face is because the risk of scarring is very minimal with this kind of treatment. However, laser treatment is not recommended for any individual with a history of skin cancer, either themselves or in their family.
Excision Removal
Some deeper-seated skin lesions may require cutting away in an ellipse shape. The procedure requires a local anaesthetic, followed by a few stitches to close the wound. After the procedure, you will notice a small linear scar, which can fade over time or be improved with the laser subsequently.

I had a great experience here at Dr Jinah Yoo! I had the ‘brightening’ treatment after having too much sunburn on my summer vacation, and it really helped. The process was very enjoyable thanks to the skillful and gentle practitioner. I will come back in the future if I have any needs for skin improvements!
A perfect experience! I had the Dermal Tightening Programme which is for lift up. The therapist is very professional and the environment is also very helpful for relaxing. Nice location as well.
Absolutely love the place. Had some moles removed from my face by Dr Yoo. A week later there is not the slightest indication that there was ever even anything there. Results are incredible.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Sun Spot Removal FAQ’s
How does the laser pigmentation removal treatment work?
The laser pigmentation removal treatment targets excess skin pigment in sun spots and age spots by using controlled light energy to break down pigmentation. This approach allows the body to naturally remove the fragmented pigment over time, resulting in a clearer, more even skin tone. Our advanced laser treatment offers effective results with minimal discomfort and downtime.
Will the laser treatment be effective on all types of sun spots?
Laser treatment is highly effective for treating age spots, sun spots, and other forms of hyperpigmentation. However, the results may vary based on the skin type and depth of pigmentation. For certain cases of persistent pigmentation, additional options like chemical peels may be recommended to complement the laser treatment.
How many treatments will I need to see results?
The number of treatments required can vary depending on the severity of the sun spots, the depth of skin pigment, and individual skin response. Most patients achieve noticeable improvement after 2-3 sessions, although some may require additional sessions for optimal results. During your consultation, we’ll create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your needs.
Can laser treatments for sun spots cause skin damage?
No, our laser treatments are designed to specifically target pigmentation without harming surrounding skin, making it a safe and effective choice for sun spot removal. All procedures are performed by experienced professionals who prioritise patient safety to minimise the risk of any skin damage.
What should I do to care for treated skin after the procedure?
After your sun spot removal laser treatment, it’s essential to avoid sun exposure and use a high SPF to protect the skin. Wearing protective clothing and avoiding hot showers can also help the skin heal effectively and maintain the results. Our specialists will provide comprehensive aftercare instructions to ensure the best recovery and long-lasting results.
Are there any alternative treatments to laser treatment for sun spots?
Yes, alternatives like chemical peels are a great addition to laser therapy. They can be highly effective for lighter pigmentation or cases of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Will sun spots return after laser treatment?
While laser treatment effectively reduces existing sun spots, new spots may develop if the skin is exposed to the sun without protection. Practising good sun habits, such as wearing SPF daily, avoiding peak sunlight hours, and using protective clothing, can help prevent new sun spots from forming.
